Four goals for Facey as Devils roll over Lions

Saturday night, the Solent Devils made their way to London, to take on the Lee Valley Lions, for the second time this season – their previous meeting having gone decisively to the Devils, 13-4 in Gosport.

Within the first three minutes, Lee Valley took a penalty, when captain Nicholas Alley was sent to the penalty box for Kneeing, and the Devils took full advantage, William Crossley and Alex Murray setting up Drew Campbell for the first goal of the night, just twelve seconds after Alley left the ice.

Less than two minutes later, Daniel Shire gave Rhys McCormick an assist, making it 2-0 to the Devils.

The Devils, then started dominating the game, Aaron Taylor in the Devils net having to do relatively little work.

As the period progressed, the Lions were holding the Devils from breaking through, but the visitors continued their assault and Richard Facey earned his first goal of the evening, with the assist coming from Devils captain, Alex Cole.

Chritopher Hocquigny made it 4-0 with three minutes left in the first period, his assist coming from Mark Pitts, after the two of them had been circling the Lions goal, forcing Brett Shepherd to make save after save.

The Devils weren’t ready for the break yet though, surging through with barely thirty seconds until the buzzer, Facey sent the puck to Campbell, who’s shot was saved, but the rebound was put away by McCormick.

The Devils took a penalty right at the buzzer, with Cole missing the first two minutes of the second period for holding, but the Devils managed to hold tight and the Lions couldn’t make use of the extra man.

Having had a few chances though, the Lions kept attacking, and with Taylor lay out after making a big save from an attack by Chris Fox, Matthew Hamilton was there to get the scoring started for the home team.

Both teams took a penalty during the second, but both held each other at bay, right up until the period was winding down.  Murray, who had been hanging back to bolster the defence, got the puck to Facey, who went on to make the score 6-1 in time for the second break.

Five minutes in to the third period, Matt Brown was sent to the penalty box for tripping, and the Devils surged once more, Cole helping Alex Trendal to get his seventh goal of the season.

The Devils then took a penalty, as Pitts was called for holding, and he was followed seconds later by Cole, also for holding.

The three remaining Devils skaters took up their positions in front of Taylor, helping to defend the goal, and as Pitts stepped back on to the ice the Devils went on the attack, Facey passing to Pitts, who knocked the puck back from the crowd, to Kieran Annis on the blue line, who fired the puck past everyone and in to the net.

As the game continued, Trendal was attacking, with the Lions defence trying to shut him down, after the whistle blew, Trendal let them know he was not happy about what had happened, and as the referee stepped in to stop anything from escalating, Trendal gave one of the Lions a poke with the end of his stick, earning him 2+2+10 minutes for butt ending, and seeing him head for an early shower.

This gave the Lions a reason to rally, Robin Young and Oliver Glover providing assists for Chris Fox to get the Lions second goal of the game.

It didn’t slow the Devils though, full of confidence, especially some of the veteran players, which is when Campbell and Facey earned another short handed goal, making the score 9-2.

The Lions pushed back, and following a turnover in the Devils zone, head coach Murray went on a breakaway, all the way to the other end of the rink, where he took his time and slotted the puck between Shepherd’s legs, for an unassisted, short handed goal.

As the game headed in to the final two minutes, the Devils were heading in to the Lions zone again, when Cole and Facey helped Hocquigny earn his second goal, his fourth as a Devil.

With a smile on his face, with less than twenty seconds left of the game and with a hat trick already under his belt, Facey found the net once more, Shire giving him the assist, ending the game 12-2 to the Devils, meaning the struggling Lee Valley Lions remain bottom of the table, having suffered seven losses in seven games this year.

This Saturday, the Devils are at home for just the third time this season, as they host Invicta.  Face off at 5pm, at the Gosport Arena.
