Four-goal first sends Canada over Czechia Canada lose Poulin to injury

Canada continued their strong play against Czechia with a 5–1 victory, highlighted by an emphatic four-goal first period.

New York Sirens forward Kristin O’Neill got things underway early, while her Sirens teammate Sarah Fillier, Montréal Victoire forward Laura Stacey, and Seattle Torrent forward Julia Gosling all added to the scoreline before the first intermission.

Fillier and Gosling now each have three points through two games for Canada. Natálie Mlýnková scored Czechia’s lone goal of the night, bringing her tournament goal total to three.

Despite the convincing win, there is concern surrounding Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who left the game in the first period after sustaining an apparent lower-body injury following a hit from New York Sirens rookie and PWHL leading goal scorer Kristýna Kaltounková. Poulin was able to skate off under her own power, but her status for Canada’s highly anticipated matchup with the United States remains unknown.

Canada currently sits second in Group A with six points and will face the United States tomorrow at 2:10 PM ET in a pivotal preliminary round matchup. Czechia finishes preliminary play in third place for now, though they could still be leapfrogged depending on results elsewhere.
