Fortune smiles on Dallas, Stars extend series with OT win

In Edmonton, Tyche smiled with favor on the Dallas Stars.  Joe Pavelski scored late in the third period to force overtime on Saturday night with the Tampa Bay Lighting. That was the first turn of chance in their favor as the Stars were working to extend their Stanley Cup Final series  beyond five games.

Pavelski’s goal tied the game, 2-2.

“It’s fun to be up there with those guys, and we’ll try to keep going,” Pavelski said. “We’ll look at [the record] another day. … We’re trying to get that trophy.”

Corey Perry ended the affair in the second extra session when Tyche smiled once again on Dallas when he potted the winner for a 3-2 win and cut the Lightning’s lead in the series to 3-2.

“We talked about it all day, we get one we keep going,” Perry said. “We start building here, and I think we’re starting to do something special.”

Game 6 is set for Monday night.

“Anytime you lose a game in the playoffs, you’re disappointed,” Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper said. “But we’ve been pretty good at responding after losses. Like I’ve said, we’ve been doing this for over two months, so we’ve got a good idea of what’s ahead of us and how to respond.”

The Stars were outshot in the first overtime, 7-2, and managed a 4-4 stand-off in the second extra session.

“It’s obviously not the outcome you want. But at the same time we knew it was going to be a hard series and, you know, we had some good looks in overtime and throughout the game,” Tampa’s Victor Hedman said. “But it wasn’t our night. And they scored. So at the end of the day, we look forward to [the] next game.”

Perry opened the scoring in the game when he staked the Stars to a 1-0 lead late in the opening frame.

Anton Khudobin made 39 saves to get the crucial win.

“We hang in there, we really do,” Pavelski said. “We stick with it, stick with the plan. We’ve been through a lot together. We’re in a hole, this gets us a step closer, but we’ve got a ways to go. We’ve got better hockey still, and huge win, what a goal at the end there.”

Tyler Seguin, who might best represent the god of irony, Momus  assisted all three Dallas goals.

“We believe,” Seguin said. “Yesterday and tonight, we had so much fun. It’s such a great time to be playing hockey and these games have been so good, and we’ve been told we’re the underdogs non-stop, which we are, so we’re relishing that and we’re having a good time.”

Tampa’s  Ondrej Palat ti tied the game at 1-1 in the middle frame.

“I thought we played good enough game to win,” Palat said. “I felt in overtime we really tilted the ice. We had a lot of possession, a lot of chances. We just didn’t score on them. Yeah, they’re a good team. They battled back.”

Mikhail Sergachev gave the Lightning a 2-1 lead early in the third period.

“I mean, we were close, 10 minutes away,” Sergachev said. “But the job’s not finished. They scored a goal. Didn’t hold the lead.”

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 30 saves in the loss.

“We’ve been in this situation before,” Hedman said. “We’re a very resilient group. We know how to respond to adversity. So you know, we were up 3-1, now it’s 3-2, so just have to go out and get the next one. That’s our focus. We’re obviously disappointed not to win today, obviously. But we just have to look forward and get ready for Monday.”
