In New York it was another pathetic display of ineptness on offense for the Rangers.
Trailing by one heading into the third period, the urgency of the game and standings potential led to five shots n goal.
Five shots.
It’s no longer funny or amusing, it is an embarrassment.
On Friday night, the Rangers wasted a brilliant goalie effort in a 1-0 loss; another shutout loss.
Jaroslav Halak made 21 saves in the win.
“I just try to play my best every night and not every night it’s going to work out, but it seems like it’s been working against these guys,” Halak said. “Tonight, I thought we were really good in the second and third periods.”
There is no urgency or sense of need to get a winning streak going. Has management decided this season is a gimme and wait until next year? In a shortened schedule the Rangers are close to being the Red Lantern in the NHL.
“It’s not good enough to lose games by a goal,” the Rangers’ Jacob Trouba said. “It’s the NHL and you got to win games, find a way to get points. Especially in a shortened season, we got to find ways to win hockey games. That’s the bottom line.”
Ya think?
“I think ‘Jaro’ has been solid all year. … I thought he was real good tonight, ” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “I don’t remember a lot of rebounds honestly coming back out.”
Nick Ritchie scored the game’s only goal in the middle frame.
“It’s nice to score a goal any way, it doesn’t really matter if it’s on the power play, 5-on-5, whatever way it is, it’s just nice to see the puck go in,” Ritchie said. “I think everyone would take a goal any way at this point.”
“Tonight, it worked out and I think everybody on our penalty kill, they deserve the credit because they did a terrific job,” Halak said.
New York was scoreless in six power play chances. The offense has not been this ineffectual in generations.
“This is a team that’s competing for the Stanley Cup and built to win right now,” Rangers head coach David Quinn said. “We have a ton of respect for the way they play. They play the right way and we can learn an awful lot of lessons from them, but I was proud of the way we stood toe-to-toe with them.”
No excuse. The Rangers were inept and only a solid netminder performance kept from getting blown out.
Igor Shesterkin made 29 saves in a terrific effort that was wasted on the likes of the skaters in front of him.
