In Columbus Friday night, the visiting Philadelphia Flyers got an overtime goal from Sean Couturier to defeat the Blue Jackets, 2-1.
It was the fist win for the Flyers in Columbus in nearly 13 years.
“I had an idea where I was going to shoot,” Couturier said. “I tried to change my angle and I got him to bite on it.”
And with the loss, the fuse in Columbus burned a little brighter, a ;little hotter and crept closer to the sticks.
“I don’t have an answer for you how we can play with that type of energy and that type of execution in a game as important as this,” Jackets head coach John Tortorella said. “I have no idea why we threw something like that on the ice tonight.”
Cam Atkinson’s goal at least got the Jackets the loser’s point; he scored with just over three minutes left in regulation to tie it at 1-1.
Wayne Simmonds scored midway through the second period to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
“This is an important two points for us,” Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s two points in the bank and move on.”
Michal Neuvirth made 35 saves to pick up the win.
“They put the puck on net from every angle,” Neuvirth said. “It’s exactly what we expected. There were no surprises.”
The Flyers improved to 29-19-10.
“Both goaltenders played really well tonight,” Hakstol said. “It was exactly that, a tight, grinding game. Both teams made enough plays to be more than a 1-1 game.”

Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves in the loss.
“The first two periods we played into their hands. We have to play our game and not let them set the pace. In the third we got a lucky bounce to get us a point,” the Blue Jackets’ David Savard said after the loss.
Columbus dropped to 29-24-5.
