In Washington, DC, Martin Jones made 31 saves for  the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night in a 2-1 win over the Capitals.

Martin Jones got the win for the Philadelphia Flyers

“I feel good,” Jones said. “The team’s playing well. We’re defending really well, and the penalty kill’s been good. That’s a good recipe for success for a goalie.”

The Flyers moved to 6-2-2.

“With such a strong team like that, they’re going to have a push, and they’re going to have some looks,” Philadelphia head coach Alain Vigneault said. “We got the saves at the right time and we battled hard. We battled for every inch on the ice. I really liked our team effort tonight.”

Derick Brassard and Sean Couturier were the strikers for Philadelphia.

“The one thing we talked about this morning is that we’re not going to score every game, but we’ve got to be effective,” Brassard said of his line with Atkinson and Joel Farabee. “We’re not a one-line team, we’re a four-line team, and since the beginning of the season, everyone’s chipping in offensively.”

Brett Leason had the lone Washington goal.

“I thought in all three zones they were just quicker than us,” Washington head coach Peter Laviolette said. “When your opponent is quicker than you in the defensive zone, you’re going to give up shots, you’re going to give up zone time. … We just needed to be better.”

The Caps dropped to 5-2-4.

“They played really well in the offensive zone tonight,” the Capitals’ John Carlson said. “They were slamming walls, they were making it tough to get it out with possession, and I think we turned it over a little too much.”

Vitek Vanecek made 30 saves. in the Caps loss.

“We were sleeping in the first and we got outworked in the second, so the third period I thought was our best period,” Laviolette said. “We started getting it behind them a little bit more, playing in the offensive zone and generating some chances.”
