Flyers thump Stars, 5-1 Tippett scores double in win

PHILADELPHIA – Samuel Ersson made 14 saves on Thursday night in a 5-1 win for the Flyers over the visiting Dallas Stars.

“Coming into this game, I think we kind of talked that we wanted to make a statement,” the Flyers Morgan Frost said. “I think most of the League knows that they’re one of the top teams in the League, and I think we came out flying. So, it’s nice to see.”

The Flyers improved to 2514-6..

The Flyers held the Stars to one shot in the first period.

“I think we were well-prepared in what they do and how good they are, how deep they are,” the Flyers Scott Laughton said. “I just think our sticks in the neutral zone, breaking up plays, creating turnovers and going the other way. It’s hard to play against when you play a three-quarter ice game like that and create chances for yourself. Guys have got confidence right now, and it’s been fun to watch.”

Sean Walker scored with 60 seconds left in the first period to stake the Flyers to a 1-0 lead.

Owen Tippett hit for this first of his double on the night three minutes into the middle frame.

Tyler Seguin  was the lone striker for Dallas, his second period goal at 12:42 cut the deficit to 2-1.

“On the road, you want to start strong, and I don’t know what the shots were, maybe 15-1,” Seguin said. “That’s not a recipe for success. … Jake held us in. We wanted to respond in the second, Jake held us in again. By the third, it was just too much.”

The Stars dropped to 26-13-5.

“They were really good, and we were very bad,” Stars coach Peter DeBoer said. “It was a combination of both things. … I thought we were good for about the first minute, we had a couple chances right off the bat, and then the next 59 minutes, they won every race, they won every puck battle. So, just a poor, poor, poor effort.”

In the third period, Cam Atkinson scored off the power play with 44 seconds gone for a 3-1 advantage.

Laughton was awarded a penalty shot midway through the third and connected for a 4-1 lad.

Tippett collected his double at 14:30 off a highlight reel move.

“It’s fun to watch,” Laughton said. “Any time you see him pick up the puck with speed, you’re on the edge of your seat. You know something’s coming. I think he’s just coming into his own right now. It’s fun to watch, fun to be part of.”

Jake Oettinger made 38 saves in the loss.
