In Washington, DC< the Philadelphia Flyers got another strong effort from across the roster on Saturday night and defeated the Capitals, 3-1, for their second straight win over Washington.
“I think the last two games we haven’t been ourselves. So, that is something we have to change,” Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom said. “We had the puck a lot, we had good possession, but it is about scoring goals. We’ve got to create more. We’ve got to score more goals.”
The Capitals have lost three of four, two of them to the Flyers.
Carter Hart made 39 saves for the game, including 19 in the third period.
“On our heels in the third period. That’s when Carter just steps up big time,” Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said. “But it’s a good team win for us. We did some really good things in the first two periods. … And then Carter took over the game in the third.”
The Flyers moved to 18-18-7.
The Flyers’ Scott Laughton and Caps’ Alex Ovechkin traded first period goals for a 1-1 tie.
Philadelphia took the lead in the middle frame on a goal from James Van Riemsdyk .
“We were late getting back in the zone, and when that happens it just got stretched out for a second,” Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said. “We’re usually pretty tight coming back. I thought that we could’ve done a better job of just getting back towards the top of the house and maybe get a stick on that [puck] as it came across ice.”
The Capitals dropped to 23-16-6.
Wade Allison scored late in the second period for a 3-1 lead to the Flyers.
“Timely goals,” Tortorella said. “Some grinding with ‘Ally’s’ goal. That’s a big goal. I thought we were protecting the puck well. No one particular thing [tonight]. I just thought we played well as a team.”
Darcy Kuemper made 22 saves in the Washington loss.
“I feel like we are getting to the offensive zone,” Capitals forward Tom Wilson said, “but when we are there, that is when we’ve got to make the next play, and we haven’t been doing that.”
