Flyers Take 1 Goal Advantage into Second Leg in Sheffield

The Fife Flyers will take a one goal advantage into the 2nd leg of the Challenge Cup semi final when the two teams meet at the Arena on the 15th February after a 3-2 home victory over the Steelers.

Steelers had trialed 2-0 after the first period but with second period goals from Robert Dowd and Martin Latal were level after 40 minutes.

Flyers scored the only goal of the final period to secure victory on the night.

First Period…

Despite having the majority of the play in the opening period, it is the Flyers who lead 2-0 after 20 minutes with two power-play strikes.

Steelers had chances in the opening 10 minutes with Neumann, Dowd and Allen all going close.

Flyers took the first penalty of this two legged tie in the 12th minute with Mikael Johansson taking a tripping minor, half way through the Steelers power-play Danny Kristo gave up the puck and Flyers broke short handed with Evan Mosey called upon to take a minor penalty

Flyers returned to full strength and Johansson back on the ice, it was he who forced the puck past Greenfield moments later (14.06)

19.12 and the Flyers back on the power-play with Tomas Pitule off for holding – just moments later and a blast from Zack Phillips beats Greenfield to double Fife’s advantage.

Second Period …

Steelers dominated the majority off the middle period and have worked themselves back into this Cup semi final.

The ice tilted in The Steelers favour from the re-start though Fife twice went close as they hit back on the rush against the run of play.

Steelers finally broke through when Dowdy scored from close range t0 halve the deficit in the 28th minute. Niklas Nevalainen with the shot and Dowd intercepting and then finishing off the move.

With Steelers outshooting the Flyers 18-7 in the middle session the equalising goal was always just around the corner, it came on the power-play with Emmeradahl offer boarding.

Martin Latal tied the game at 31.53 with Danny Kristo assisting.

Mason Mitchell took a late boarding penalty but Steelers killed the Flyers one man advantage.

A 2-0 first period to Fife and a second 2-0 period for The Steelers – it’s 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Third Period …

Flyers started the final period on the front foot and were soon back ahead when Brayden Sherbinin scored in the 44th minute.

49.25 – Steelers power-play with Bafaro off for hooking

Steelers had chances on the 2 minute advantage but Fife killed.

Minutes later and Steelers thought they were back on the power-play when a delayed call on Bafaro was made, seconds later with the puck still in play Martin Latal was called for tripping to even out the penalties.

Steelers through everything at the Flyers goal in the final minutes but Owen, as he has done so many times stood tall.
