Flyers recover, down Isles in OT to even series

In Toronto, the Philadelphia Flyers needed extra time to win Game 2 of their series with the New York Islanders after squandering a 3-0 lead in the first period.Philippe Myers scored with 2:41 gone in the over time session to rescue the Flyers.

“[Sean Couturier] gave me the puck low to high,” Myers said. “I saw that I had a lane. I was trying to get it on net, and it went in.”

Carter Hart made 31 saves in the win.

“I was looking for a spark,” Islanders head coach Barry Trotz said. “I thought we didn’t help [Varlamov] enough. Three goals … I think it was on nine shots, and I just was looking for something a little bit different. Not his fault. We didn’t give him enough support there.”

Anders Lee, Anthony Beauvillier and Jean-Gabriel Pageau rallied the Isles back from the early three-goal deficit.

“We did some good things,” Lee said. “Obviously, the start wasn’t what we wanted. They came out and they were playing well, you’ve got to give them credit. They’ve got a good team. I thought we just keep battling and sticking with it. Once you get to overtime, sometimes that’s all it takes. They get one off the shaft and it goes in.”

Kevin Hayes struck twice, and Sean Couturier added a single marker for the Flyers in their first period outburst.

“When you lose Game 1 and your next two games are back to back, Game 2 is a pretty important game,” Hayes said. “Every game is important, but tonight was probably the most important game of the season.”

It’s a quick turn around for both teams, with Game 3 set for Thursday.

Thomas Greiss took the loss after entering the game in relief of Semyon Varlamov in the fist period.

“I thought we just stuck with it,” Pageau said. “We came back after the first, refocused, made sure we were coming back and just getting back to the simple things, work hard, and do all the simple plays and get back as a unit of five and attack as a unit of five. I thought we did a really good job in the second and in the third to put pressure on them, and that’s why we came back.”

Varlamov yielded three goals and made seven saves before getting the hook.
