Flyers rally past Islanders in OT, 3-2

In Brooklyn Sunday, the Philadelphia Flyers got a rare goal from Claude Giroux in a 3-2 overtime win over the New York Islanders.

Giroux’s goal was his 11th on the season and first in 13 games after he took a pass from Shayne Gostisbehere behind the Isles’ net.

“I thought [Gostisbehere’s shot was] in actually, and then he was able to go around the net and kind of give it to me there,” Giroux said. “The last few weeks have been tough, but hopefully this will give us a little boost here.”

three-game win streak snapped.

“It’s always disappointing; you want that extra point and you want to win that game in regulation,” Greiss said. “We have to have those points. They are right ahead of us in the [wild card standings].”

Greiss had been on a shutout run after blanking the Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars in consecutive games.

Wayne Simmonds broke the streak with his goal in the second period which cut the Flyers deficit at the time to 2-1.

“A little bit of relief,” Simmonds said. “We knew we hadn’t been playing good when we were down 2-0, but as long as you stick with it, that is the name of the game at this time of year.”

Nick Leddy and Alan Quine had scored for New York to give them the 2-0 lead.

Ivan Provorov tied the 2-2 in the third period.

“I think we’ve been coming out with the shooting mentality, don’t force plays and try to force the puck to the net and see what happens,” Provorov said.

Steve Mason made 36 saves for the win and survived a full game for a change after having been given the hook in the last two games.

“It’s been a tough stretch and this is more of the type of game that I expect of myself,” Mason said. “In recent games, the team was lacking in big saves and tonight it showed what kind of difference it can make.”
