PHILADELPHIA – The St Louis Blues built a 3-1 lead in the first period and then sat back and watched as the Philadelphia Flyers scored three unanswered goals to win, 4-3.
Evgeny Medvedev picked up the game-winner with just over three minutes left in regulation to send the Flyers to the victory.
“We kind of turned it into a track meet a little bit in the second,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “The shorthanded goal against hurt us a lot, gave them momentum and then the second goal … the third goal’s going to happen. The second goal’s what gave them the breathing room, and then it just turned into somebody was going to score in the third.
“There was a lot of poor puck decisions in the second period. They made a lot in the first, and we made a lot in the second. Both teams pressured each other. They dialed it up in the second, and we started turning the puck over. We didn’t manage it very well at all.”
Wayne Simmonds scored twice, and Chris VandeVelde added a goal for the Flyers.
Steve Mason had 26 saves in the win.
“There’s this belief that if we stick to it, we won’t always come back, but we’ll give
ourselves a chance,” Mason said. “Tonight, we gave ourselves a chance. Stuck around, made it a one-goal game going into the third period. Hard work took over, and guys were rewarded for a strong second half of the game.”
Robby Fabbri, Kevin Shattenkirk and Magnus Paajarvi scored for the Blues.
“We’ll have to hopefully learn a lesson and one more before Christmas and we can go into Boston, a tough building, find two points in that barn,” Blues captain David Backes said.
Jake Allen took the loss on 27 saves.
