Flyers rally late, win in OT, 4-3, over Carolina

PHILADELPHIA – In the span of just over one minute of playing time, the Flyers went from losing to winning Sunday night.

send the match with the Carolina Hurricanes to extra time.

Brayden Schenn  then scored with 38 seconds give in the overtime session to give the Flyers the 4-3 win.

“Me and [Couturier] picked up speed, [Provorov] head-man pass to him and a couple criss-crosses,” Schenn said. “[Couturier] beat his guy wide with speed and I was there to tap in the rebound.”

Steve Mason made 19 saves to pick up the win and help the Flyers edge a bit closer to the Toronto Maple Leafs who have a five point cushion for the second wild card spot.

“We have an extremely tough task ahead of us,” Mason said. “We’re going to have to have our best game each and every night on this trip in order to keep the season alive here.”

The Canes trail the Flyers by a point in the standings.

Carolina’s goals came from Elias Lindholm, Jeff Skinner and Jordan Staal.

“Obviously it would have been nice to have two points here,” Lindholm said. “I think the other games we work our best to get the two points, and today we didn’t. It would have been nice today.”

Dale Weise and Ivan Provorov also scored for the Flyers.

Cam Ward made 40 saves in taking the loss.

The loss dropped the Hurricanes to 30-27-13  but they have points in seven straight games with a 5-0-2 record.

“They’re not easy to swallow, but there’s games coming up quick, so we are going to learn from it. Take some time and honestly think about the effort that was out there and keep moving forward,” Staal said after the loss.
