Flyers rally falls short in OT loss Flyers rally earns point in OT loss

PHILADELPHIA – The visiting New Jersey Devils held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 over the Flyers on Thursday night, and ended up needing a goal from Luke Hughes in extra time to finally get a 4-3 win.

“Got a stick on the [Travis] Sanheim shot to deflect it,” Luke Hughes said. “Nico [Hischier] won a battle and then popped it up to Jack and I just beat my man up the ice. It was pretty easy to put in that one when it’s right in your wheelhouse, so it was a great pass out of him.”

Akira Schmid made 44 saves in the win.

“To win three in a row, you’ve got to win them in different ways,” Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. “Sometimes it isn’t the prettiest. We’re down a lot of manpower and to come in here on the road and win a game, it was a good effort by our club.”

New Jersey moved to 11-9-1.

New Jersey took a 2-0 lead on first period goals from Alexander Holtz  and Jack Hughes.

Philadelphia dropped to 11-10-2.

“We battled to the end,” Flyers forward Scott Laughton said. “… Obviously you want the second [point], but we didn’t get there and I thought we gave ourselves a chance to win.”

The Flyers trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on a power play marker from Morgan Frost at 11:49 middle frame

“We had a fair amount of good looks,” Frost said. “A couple bounces here and there we probably get another one. I thought we had a lot of good looks and just got to put it in the net on more occasions.”

Tyler Toffoli hit off the power-play at 4:31 of the third to restored the two-goal lead for New Jersey at 3-1.

The Flyers rallied on a pair of goals late in the third.

Sean Walker got the Flyers within one at 3-2 with five minutes left in the game.

Tyson Foerster forced the extra time when he scored on 6-on-4 power-play with 51 seconds left on the regulation game clock.

“We just kept on playing,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “They scored the third one, they went into a little bit of a defensive 1-4 and we were throwing things into it, we got a little sloppy for a bit. But we kept on playing and found a way to get a point.”

Carter Hart made 31 saves in the loss.
