Flyers rally, down Kraken in OT

In Seattle, the Philadelphia Flyers’ James van Riemsdyk hit for his second goal of the game in the third period to tie the Kraken, 2-2, on Wednesday night and force extra time.

Ivan Provorov struck for the game-winner with 2:14 gone in the extra session to give the Flyers a 3-2 win.

“Kevin came back, so I dropped to him and continued going,” Provorov said. “I cut straight across to try and get behind their players and Kevin was able to find me with a really nice pass and I just tried to get [Philipp] Grubauer to bite.”

Martin Jones made 34 saves in the Flyers win.

“In the third period, I think we recognized that we’re pretty fortunate to be in the position that we were,” Philadelphia coach Mike Yeo said. “That’s where I thought we had a better mindset. This is where you need the urgency that every play can be the difference in the game. It doesn’t matter if it’s the first period, second period, whatever the time.”

The Flyers improved to 13-12-5).

“I thought we started to get more of that urgency in our game in the third period,” Yeo said. “I will say this, we showed a lot of character tonight. We made it real difficult on ourselves, but the third-period responses were good.”

Jeremy Lauzon scored for the Kraken, it was his first goal with Seattle.

“We created enough opportunities and we defended really well,” Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol said. “There’s not a whole lot out of the script that I would change coming off an 11-day break. I thought that our structure was good, and our effort was really good. It’s just really disappointing to not come away with the two points.”

The Kraken dropped to 10-17-4.

Yanni Gourde scored for Seattle after the Flyers had taken a 1-0 lead on van Riemsdyk’s first goal of the game.

“In the first two periods we turned over too many pucks, we weren’t just supporting each other, and winning battles,” the Flyers’ Claude Giroux said. “It was pretty bad. ‘Jonesy’ kept us in the game. And the third, I thought we played a little bit more how we want to play as a team.”

Philip Grubauer made 19 saves in the Seattle loss.
