Flyers lose to Islanders, 3-2

In Uniondale, the New York Islanders managed to down the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, 3-2. on penalties.

It took four rounds before anyone scored.

Mathew Barzal was credited with the only goal in the penalties.

“I’ve played ‘Hartsy’ a few times now and I feel like it’s kind of been 50-50; he’s gotten the better of me a little bit and I’ve scored a few times too,” Barzal said. “So it’s kind of a fun matchup and [I] just found a little hole there on the left side and buried it.”

New York took a 2-0 lead into the third period off two strikes from Anthony Beauvillier.

“It was actually kind of a weird game the way it played out,” Beauvillier said. “I thought we did a good job kind of just sticking with the process at the end there. It’s never easy when you blow a lead and they come back and have a push. I thought we did a good job of managing the game at the end. Huge two points for us.”

Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves for the Isles and stopped all four shooters for the Flyers.

“I thought he made some key saves at key times,” Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. “I thought he was really good when they got it tied 2-2. They have a couple of good looks and he looked very calm. He didn’t get small by the moment and then in the shootout, he was outstanding.”

Claude Giroux scored twice in the third period for Philadelphia to get the the game to an extra session.

“I think where we’re at at this point in the season, it’s disappointing not to get that second point,” Giroux said. “In the shootout, anything can happen. We need those extra points. But in saying that, I think our game today was our best in a while. We need to build on this.”

Carter Hart made 22 saves in the loss.

“He played well tonight,” Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault said. “He did what we expect a goaltender to do, give your team chance, and he did that.”
