Flyers lose to Flames, 5-2, skid hits seven

PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers lost their seventh straight game on Monday night, 5-2, to the Calgary Flames.

Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves for the Flames win.

Calgary improved to 9-7-2.

Jonathan Huberdeau and Dillon Dube scored in the first period to give the Flames a 2-0 lead.

“Both the goals, we’re not supporting our D,” Flyers goach John Tortorella said. “Our D were in the rush, our D was pinched on the two situations and our forwards didn’t back them up, gave up a 2-on-1. … Those are fundamental mistakes we made as far as backing up when you see your D involved somewhere. That last forward needs to back up and we didn’t on both occasions and it’s in the back of our net.”

Philadelphia picked up one of those goals, from Tanner Laczynski , to trail, 2-1, headed to the middle frame.

The Flyers dropped to 7-8-4, and skated without several injured regulars.

“It’s next man up right now,” defenseman Travis Sanheim said. “Obviously, key guys out with injuries and we’ve just got to find a way to stick together as a group and continue to fight through this and find a way to win some hockey games.”

Calgary reclaimed their two-goal in the second when Rasmus Andersson put them up, 3-1.

Joel Farabee revived the Flyers for a bit near the midway point of the third period to make it 3-2.

In the final two minutes of regulation, Calgary picked up two empty-net goals for the 5-2 final, Blake Coleman and Trevor Lewis  hit the empty-netters.

“Thought we stuck with it,” Coleman said. “A little tighter than maybe we need to make the game sometimes. They worked hard, they kept coming. Give them credit for the group they put on the ice there. [At the] end of the day, we found a way to win. Two in a row on the road here, and now we got to build on it.”

Coleman, a native of Texas,  played in his 400th career NHL game.

“It shows our game is really growing,” said Flames associate coach Kirk Muller, who played his final four NHL seasons (1999-2003) with the Dallas Stars. “When I was in Dallas, you saw the rinks being built and the kids playing hockey there. He’s an example of those kids that have come up now and made the NHL, and not only for a few games.

“To play 400 games is quite an honor. And he had a heck of a game to finish that 400th game. It’s a nice, memorable game for him.”

Carter Hart made 24 saves in the Flyers loss.
