In Elmont, Zach Parise scored midway through the third period to snap a 3-3 tie and send the New York Islanders a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.
“I take a lot of pride in playing hard every night,” Parise said. “Sometimes it goes in, sometimes it’s a little harder to go in. But hopefully I’ll be heating up here in the near future.”
The loss was the 13th straight for the Flyers.
“It’s a tough team to play against, [but] we scored three goals tonight,” Flyers coach Mike Yeo said. “If you would’ve told me that we would’ve scored three goals tonight, I would’ve said that we would at least get a point. We gave up four, and we have to cut that down.”
Philadelphia took a 2-0 lead before the game was two minutes old.
Claude Giroux and Justin Braun posted the markers.
Noah Dobson and Anders Lee replied for the Isles before the end of the opening 20 to tie the game, 2-2.
“I think it was a great response,” Dobson said. “You never want to start the game down two (goals), but we were composed on the bench, went out and got one, got some momentum off that and went into the third [with a lead], so it was a good response.”
Philadelphia fell to 13-22-8.
Mathew Barzal gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead in the middle frame.
The Flyers tied the game, 3-3, early in the third period off a strike from Gerry Mayhew .
“It’s been rough around here,” Mayhew said. “To get that goal, I was pretty pumped as you saw. But it’s nothing if we don’t win. I know we’re battling as hard as we can, it’s just … I don’t know. I don’t know what to do.”
The losing streak is the longest in Flyers franchise history.
Martin Jones made 29 saves in the Flyers loss.
The Flyers’ Keith Yandle set the new iron man record, playing in his 965th consecutive game.
“It’s one of those things that I don’t think it’s really sunk in too much yet,” Yandle said. “It’s obviously something I’m super grateful for. I’m grateful to play one game in this league, the best league in the world. To be surrounded by the best people, people that always have your back, people that are rooting for you, to be a part of the NHL and the NHL family and for me being [a part of it] the last 16 years, it’s more than a dream come tru
