Flyers head to the road after 6-1 drubbing by Islanders

PHILADELPHIA – It went from bad to worse on Saturday for the Flyers.

After dropping a 3-0 decision to the Bruins in Boston, the Flyers returned home and dropped a lackluster 6-1 decision to the visiting New York Islanders.

Robin Lehner made 22 saves to get the win for the Isles.

Anders Lee had a goal and four points for the afternoon’s efforts.

“You could tell we had our legs today,” Lee said. “We knew we had to get off to a good start. Obviously a tough road trip here. With a one o’clock game we wanted to get into this pretty quick. I think our first period was pretty good and to put two in and to play from there was huge. From top to bottom we had a full team effort.”

Brock Nelson struck for two goals and Leo Komarov, Anthony Beauvillier and Adam Pelech added single markers for the Islanders who improved to 4-4-1.

“I just try to play aggressive, be on attack, all while being smart,” Nelson said. “Playing with Anders and [Bailey], they’re going to get you the puck and make good plays. A couple of times I was able to see that and get some good looks.”

The Flyers dropped to 4-7-0 with the loss and have lost three straight.

“It’s tough right now. We’ve got to weather the storm. Lot of season left. I know these guys in this locker room, I know this team. I know the heart we have, the skill we have. I know we’re going to dig ourselves out,” the Flyers’ Shayne Gostisbeheresaid after the loss.

Jori Lehtera scored the lone Flyers tally in the loss.

“I think when you want it too much you press a little harder, you get away from what you’re supposed to be doing,” Flyers forward Claude Giroux said. “You’re just pressing, and I feel like we’re pressing right now. We’re tired of losing so we’re trying to do everything we can to make something happen. But sometimes it’s not always the right thing.”

Michal Neuvirth made 16 saves in the loss.

The Flyers get out of town this week with a four-game road trip.

“When you go on the road for a long time with your teammates, you get a little closer,” Giroux said. “That’s what we need right now, we need to get closer as a team. We need to go out there and play for each other. This road trip is going to be very important for the season.”
