PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers needed all 27 saves made by Brian Elliott Thursday night to defeat the New York Islanders, 6-4.
A four-goal second period helped the Flyers erase the taste of a dismal loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their previous match.
Sean Couturier, Michael Raffl, Wayne Simmonds, and Travis Konecny scored for the Flyers.
“We all knew that’s not what we wanted, especially against Pittsburgh in our house,” Raffl said. “Everybody was really [angry]. We answered tonight, and it feels really good.”
Ivan Provorov had two strikes for the Flyers in the win.
It wasn’t an easy final 20 minutes as the Flyers had a 5-2 lead entering the final frame but had to hold off a furious charge from the Isles as they were looking to avoid a four-game skid.
John Tavares and Ryan Pulock scored in the third period to make an interesting game at 5-4.
“We didn’t end the game the way we wanted to,” Provorov said. “We battled hard, stuck with it. We’ll do some video, learn from our mistakes, and get better.”
Cal Clutterbuck had two goals for the Isles.
“I like the way we played, but it’s unfortunate we have go in and scream and yell and have a conniption and threaten and sit [Mathew] Barzal on the bench for six minutes, and [Jordan Eberle], and then we play the right way,” Islanders head coach Doug Weight said.
The Flyers improved to 17-15-8.

Thomas Greiss made 26 saves in taking the loss as the Isles dropped to 20-17-4.
“We come out, we’re not bad, then something goes wrong, it kind of spirals and we can’t stop it,” Pulock said of the game’s process.
