Flyers fall to Columbus, 5-3

PHILADELPHIA – Brandon Dubinsky  broke a 3-3 tie in the third period to help the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 5-3 win over the Flyers Monday night.

“It was a huge two points for us tonight,” Dubinsky said. “We’re just trying to look up. Washington is right there, we’re right in their rearview mirror. We’re going to keep

pushing and try to catch those guys.”

The win wasn’t easy as the Blue Jackets had to kill off seven of eight penalties.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves. to get the win.

Cam Atkinson had two goals and Zach Werenski and Sam Gagner also scored for Columbus.

“We’re just scratching the surface with this group,” Columbus’ Seth Jones said. “It’s been a great year, we’ve accomplished a lot, we should be proud of ourselves [but] the real hockey hasn’t started yet. … Tonight was just another building block.”

The loss was the Flyers’ third straight.

“You turn a page and move forward tomorrow, that’s just how it is. This isn’t an easy one. This isn’t an easy loss in our own building. But bottom line is you make a choice, and that choice right now is that we have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get ready for a game here on Wednesday night,” Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said after the loss.

Travis Konecny scored twice and Brayden Schenn added a goal in the loss.

“I kind of let the game get to me and I was in the mix a lot tonight and for whatever reason I decided to bump the guy on my way back to the bench and they thought it was a penalty. It’s a stupid penalty by me and honestly I put the game in my hands there. It’s unacceptable,” Konecny said after his two-goal game.
