Flyers extend streak to six with 2-1 win over Dallas in OT

PHILADELPHIA – On Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers won their sixth straight game, 2-1, in overtime over the Dallas Stars.

Shayne Gostisbehere‘s second power play goal of the game came in the extra session to extend the Flyers streak.

The current winning streak comes after a dismal 10-game skid that seems in the distant past these days.

“You could tell the other guys on the power play, a lot of that power play was going rover, but we’re feeding off each other, finding lanes,” Gostisbehere said. “We were relentless. That goal at the end showed we weren’t giving up there.”

Dallas goalie Ben Bishop lost his stick earlier in the OT and was unable to retrieve ahead of the goal.

“I didn’t have my stick there, so I was just kind of holding (Wayne) Simmonds,” Bishop said. “I thought we cleared the puck and the next thing I knew [Gostisbehere] was coming right down the slot, and obviously I didn’t have a stick, so he made a pretty heads-up play just throwing it on the ice, and that was it.”

Gemel Smith had the lone Stars goal in the game.

The win also snapped a six-game stretch of futility for the Flyers.

“Obviously, we haven’t been successful earlier in the season in overtime,” Claude Girouxsaid. “We’ve talked about the kind of system and how we want to play in overtime. [Elliott] did a good job on a couple of the shots they had, but overall we played pretty well.”

Brian Elliott made 27 saves to pick up the win.

Bishop made 28 saves in the losing effort.

“He was outstanding,” Dallas head coach Ken Hitchcock said. “He was focused and outstanding, and you could tell all during the day he was going to play like this. He plays like this, this gives us a chance to win every night.”
