It had to come to an end at some point.
In Calgary Monday night, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Flames, 5-2, to end a near franchise record losing skid at 10 games.
It was the first win in nearly a month for the Flyers.
Brian Elliott made 43 saves in the win as he defeated his former team.
“That’s a big streak to end, and in doing it the way we did tonight with punctuation was really good for our group,” Elliott said. “We’ve got to take that and harness that and take it to the next game. We’ve got to enjoy this though. We’ve waited a little too long for it.”
One more loss and the skid would have reached a franchise record.
The Flyers’ offense was driven by two goals from Scott Laughton and single markers from Valtteri Filppula, Michael Raffl and Wayne Simmonds.
“It’s a huge win for our group, I think,” Laughton said. “It started to slip a little bit. We get to 10 games and you start getting in your own head. It’s just a really good feeling for this group right now.”
The Flames had a 1-0 lead before giving up four straight goals.
Troy Brouwer and Sean Monahan had the strikes for the Flames.
“We’ve got to be able to shrug things off when they happen and move forward,” Brouwer said. “It seems like sometimes we get a little bit down on ourselves, and maybe that’s where us as leaders can do a little bit better job of making sure that guys stay up and stay excited and not get down on ourselves.”
The four-goal stretch by the Flyers engendered little push back from Calgary.
“That was a tough one,” Calgary forward Matthew Tkachuk said. “We need to be better.”

Mike Smith took the loss on 16 saves but had little support down low from his defense.
“There’s so much character in this room that I don’t think we’re a fragile group at all. We just need to learn how to play situations and the time and the score a little bit better, and we’ll be in good shape,” Brouwer said after the loss.
