Flyers edge Vegas in OT, 4-3 Couturier scores game-winner in OT - Update to follow

PHILADELPHIA – Johnathan Marchessault scored his second goal of the game with 55 seconds left on the game clock to push the Vegas Golden Knights into a 3-3 tie with the Flyers in a Saturday matinee.

Sean Couturier scored with 60 seconds gone in extra time to give the Flyers a 4-3 win.

“It was a big win against a really good team,” Couturier said. “I think it was a good test. Thought we played a pretty good game overall. We got caught up in some penalty troubles and they gained momentum, but I thought we responded really well and stayed in control. That extra point was huge.”

Carter Hart made 28 saves in the win.

The Flyers moved to 9-7-1.

Philadelphia took at 1-0 lead off a power play marker from Owen Tippett  at 15:29 of the opening stanza.

With 59 seconds gone in the middle frame, Tyson Foerster  hit for another Flyers power play goal to push the advantage to 2-0.

“He’s been one of the most consistent players as far as strength on the puck, as far as puck battles, stick on puck, retrieving pucks,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said of Foerster. “He’s doing all the things that I thought we would have to spend some time teaching and making sure he knows the importance of it. He’s doing those things. The biggest strength of his game is scoring goals. We can’t teach him that. So hopefully this will help him get rolling that way.”

William Karlsson pulled the Knights within one at 2-1 with four minutes gone in the4 second.

“We’ve got to respect what the other team can do and minimize that part of the game and still play to our strength,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We did for part of the game but not enough.”

Marchessault hit for his first with five minutes left in the frame.

“We could have done more with the start of the third period,” Marchessault said. “We had one minute there and we could have done it better, or at least get momentum off it, and we didn’t. I don’t think we did good there.”

Just 25 seconds later, Sean Walker  reclaimed the lead for the Flyers, 3-2,

Vegas dropped to 13-4-1.

Logan Thompson made 34 saves in the loss.

“Turned one over in the first period, took a penalty as a result and they scored,” Cassidy said of the OT goal. “… End of the day, we mismanage the puck late again and it ends up in our net. So, we almost got what we deserve. You mismanage enough pucks and sooner or later it’ll cost you.”
