Flyers edge Red Wings, 2-1

Detroit, after a scoreless first period, the Philadelphia Flyers got goals from Scott Laughton and Noah Cates  in the third period to take a 2-0 lead on Saturday over the Red Wings.“We know we need to get on a run heading to the All-Star break,” Laughton said. “We didn’t play well against Chicago (a 4-1 loss on Thursday), so we needed to have a better night tonight.”

Carter, who made 30 save,s, protected the lad just enough, for a 2-1 win.

“Our defensive game is built around taking away time and space and being willing to block shots,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “We got back to doing those things tonight.”

The Flyers moved to 20-20-7,

“It was one of those tight games where it was going to come down to the first play or the first mistake. They made the play and we made the mistake,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “It’s very tough to be completely upset with the game, but we’re obviously upset with the outcome.”

Lucas Raymond was the lone striker for Detroit, he potted a marker with 43 seconds left on the third period clock.Detroit dropped to 1-18-8.

“We were doing everything right, and then Hayes makes a nice play and we kind of just stopped playing,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. “I didn’t pick up my guy and we [got] caught watching. That’s a backbreaker in a close game.”

Ville Husso made 23 saves in the Red Wings loss.
