Samuel Ersson made 31 saves in the win.
“It was huge,” Konecny said of the win. “It changes your mindset completely. We didn’t play a perfect game. We could have done a lot of things differently. But ‘Ers’ helped us out a ton. That gives us some confidence going into the break here.”
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a strike by Scott Laughton at 1:44.
The Flyers outplayed in the opening frame, being outshot, 10-2.
“Never had the puck,” said Philadelphia coach John Tortorella, who will be an assistant for the U.S. at 4 Nations. “They were quicker than us. They were much more determined than us for basically half the game I think. But [we] found a way.”
The Penguins tied it. 1-1, with less than five minutes gone in the middle frame on a marker form .Erik Karlsson .
“Let’s just state the obvious: We’re a little undermanned lately,” said Sullivan, who will coach the United States at the 4 Nations. “These guys are stepping up. They’re playing hard. “I think we played well today,” Karlsson said. “I thought we did well yesterday (in a 3-2 win at the New York Rangers) as well. Obviously on the back-to-back today, felt the guys were into it for the better part of this game. … I think we felt good about our game today even though the result wasn’t what we wanted.”
Joel Blomqvist. made 17 saves in the loss.
