Flyers edge Leafs late, 4-2, extend streak to four

PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers managed a 4-2 win Tuesday night over the Toronto Maple Leafs for their fourth straight victory.

The streak comes after a 10-game skid.

Center Sean Couturier (#14) of the Philadelphia Flyers scores on Goalie Frederik Andersen (#31) of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Sean Couturier broke a 2-2 tie late to help the Flyers to the win.

“I’ve always thought I could produce more in this league,” Couturier said after scoring his 15th goal of the season. “Just waiting to get a good opportunity, and now that I am, I’m just trying to enjoy it as much as I can, establish myself as one of those guys.”

Claude Giroux,  Travis Konecny and Scott Laughton also scored for the Flyers.

“I think [Couturier] is the kind of player that anyone can play with,” Giroux said. “He’s a smart player. He’s always in good position. Really fun to play with him.”

Patrick Marleau and James van Riemsdyk had the Leafs’ strikes in the loss.

Marleau reached 1100 points in NHL career.

“It’s nice. Coming with a win would have been a lot nicer. When you lose, it doesn’t really matter, I guess,” Marleau said after the game.

Brian Elliott made 20 saves to pick up the win.

“I don’t like the third,” Leafs head coach Mike Babcock said. “To me, we had gifted [the Flyers] two goals, so the one tough play the goalie touched the goal and then the play that they came in, we’re above those people. To me, you can’t do that. I thought we were set up pretty good, to be honest with you. I thought they worked hard and I thought they moved the puck, but I thought we were in a real good situation. In the end, we didn’t execute on things we normally execute on to win. That’s on us and two good points for them, but I really thought we let this slip away. We should have got one for sure, if not two.”

Philadelphia improved to 12-11-7 with the win.
