PHILADELPHIA – Cam Atkinson made short work of the new ice in the extra session on Tuesday, he scored with 45 seconds gone in the overtime for a 2-1 win for the Flyers over the Calgary Flames.
“Definitely wasn’t my prettiest snipe but stuck with it,” Atkinson said. “‘Coots’ made a good play. I wasn’t sure … what he was doing actually. My face lit up pretty good when it came to me and all I had to do was bury it, and huge two points for us.”
Carter Hart made 33 saves in the Flyers win.
Philadelphia improved to 8-4-2.
“Stuff’s going to happen. Some games, things are not going to go your way, but it can’t happen two games in a row,” the Flyers’ Ivan Provorov said. “And that’s our mentality.”
Calgary to took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period off a strike by Oliver Kylington.
“The first two periods were a good game, and in the third they took over and we were on our heels a lot,” the Flames’ Elias Lindholm said.
The Flames dropped to 8-3-5.
Kevin Hayes tied the game, 1-1, early in the middle frame, it was his first goal of the season for Philadelphia.
“It was a big goal,” Hayes said. “The trainers got the puck for me. I’m going to give it to Jimmy’s kid, Jimmy’s son, Beau. It’ll be one I’ll remember forever.”
Jacob Markstrom made 41 saves in the Calgary loss.
