Flyers drop 6-3 decision in Columbus

A big second period by the Columbus Blue Jackets sent them to a 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night.

Cam Atkinson scored twice in the three-goal middle frame.

“He gave us some juice in the second period,” Jackets head coach John Tortorella said.

The Jackets had been trailing the Flyers by one before Atkinson scored twice in a span of 3:08.

“We talked about it between periods. Our first period simply wasn’t good enough and competitive enough, and I think we answered the bell in the second and third,” Atkinson said after the game.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves to pick up the win.

The Flyers have become something of a sieve on defense, allowing 11 goals in two games.

“It’s pretty embarrassing,” Sean Couturier said. “Offensively, we’re trying too much, making high-risk plays. We’re creating chances, but when we’re not, we’re giving up odd-man rushes and getting caught defensively.

“It’s got to stop. This high-risk, almost summer hockey is getting out of hand.”

Travis Konecny, Oskar Lindblom and Couturier scored for the Flyers.

“There’s points in the game we got a little too cute. We’re going to get better as the year goes on. It’s still early. We’ve still got to perfect our game as it goes along,” Konecny said.

Anthony Duclair, Nick Foligno,  Josh Anderson and Sonny Milano also scored for Columbus.

The Flyers dropped to 3-4-0.

“The number of chances we’re giving up in the last three games aren’t much. It’s the home-run chances we’re giving up,” Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said after the loss.
