In Raleigh, Seth Jarvis scored with 88 seconds gone in extra time to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. “I was just trying to handle [the pass],” Jarvis said. “Right when it left his stick, it went about 2 feet in the air and started hopping. But there was no doubt in my mind I was shooting that.”
Travis Konecny had tied the game for the Flyers at 2-2 midway through the third period to force the extra session.
Frederik Andersen made 30 saves in the win.
The Hurricanes moved 44-20-6, and stayed two points back of the New York Rangers at the top of the Metropolitan Division, the Rangers beat the Boston Bruins, 5-2, on Thursday night.
“We got away with one. [Andersen] played great,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “We were pretty bad, to be quite honest. They were good. We knew what we were getting into, we just just could never get going. That’s a credit to them. I think we were looking a little for an easier night. Consequently, it looked like that.”
After a scoreless first period, the Canes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the middle frame when Jordan Martinook scored 3:56, scoring off a wrist shot from the mid slot.
“Pesce makes an incredible play looking to go on an odd-man rush,” Martinook said. “He gets it up to ‘Nechie’ and we have a 3-on-2. Then ‘Nechie’ gives it to me and I have all the time in the world.”
The Flyers replied with a goal from Scott Laughton at 4:21 for a 1-1 tie, he scored after eluding the Canes defense.
The Flyers dropped to 35-26-9, they are 2-3-1 in their last six matches as they scramble to hold the third spot in the Metro Division.
“We know how hard they work as a team. We knew we had to match that,” Philadelphia associate coach Brad Shaw said. “I thought for most of the third period and for large portions of the game, we carried the play. I thought it was a little unfortunate for us. Huge point for us.”
Caroline reclaimed the lead on a strike by Sebastian Aho midway through the second for a 2-1 lead headed to the third.
Samuel Ersson made 30 saves in the loss.
