PHILADELPHIA – Wayne Simmonds struck twice to help the Flyers defeat the Washington Capitals Sunday, 6-3.
“We just want to make the [Stanley Cup] Playoffs,” Simmonds said. “We’ve got nine games left. We’ve got to get as many points as we can and whatever happens, happens.”
Shayne Gostisbehere, Oskar Lindblom, Ivan Provorov and Jakub Voracek added single markers in for the Flyers who moved closer to the top spot in Metropolitan Division with

the win.
“If you want to put it in perspective, these are all playoff games right now. We went through a pretty long stretch where we lost a lot of points and you don’t get a chance to get those back,” Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. “We’re in the middle of a battle here. Every point that we can gain is critical. To be able to do that [Saturday] and come back with a real gutsy effort on a back-to-back against a really good hockey team, those are good points for us and important points.”
Petr Mrazek made 25 saves to get the win.
John Carlson, Alex Ovechkin and Chandler Stephenson scored for the Caps as they dropped to 41-24-7.
“We have to start playing playoff hockey,” Jay Beagle said. “You have to start right now. Teams that are fighting for spots and teams that are a little more desperate, we have to match how desperate they are and we have to go after them rather than sitting back and waiting for the game to come to us. … We’ve got to learn from this and make sure we don’t let it happen again, especially going into these last 10.”
