Flyers double up Jets

PHILADELPHIA – Scott Laughton struck twice in the first period Saturday afternoon to help the Flyers to a 4-2 win over the visiting Winnipeg Jets.

“I think we just continue to grow as a team, and wherever we finish, we finish,” Laughton said.

Carter Hart made 27 saves to get the win.

Josh Morrissey and Patrik Laine were the Jets strikers.

“Would be fun not to be down right away every game,” Laine said. “That’s something we definitely need to work on, get the opening goal.”

Sean Couturier also scored for the Flyers.

“I thought he played one of his best games tonight,” Philadelphia coach Alain Vigneault said. “That 200-foot game, real solid defensively. … Both our first two goals are his line (James van Riemsdyk and Pitlick) driving to the net, going hard. … Then definitely blocked a couple of big shots tonight that you need.”

Tyler Pitlick closed out the scoring for Philadelphia.

“It’s obviously nice when you can contribute offensively, but got to do the little details right in your own zone,” Laughton said. “Kind of learned that going back down to the minors a couple years ago and just trying to do that and become the best player that I could for this team.”

Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves in the loss.

“I think we played a pretty good hockey game,” the Jets’ Blake Wheeler said. “Don’t want to just take away from a good game that they played, but sometimes when two teams are playing well, it’s a matter of a bounce of the puck here or there. They cashed in on their chances.”
