PHILADELPHIA – The Carolina Hurricanes scored four straight goals in the game to open a 4-0 lead into the third period before the Flyers found their offense.
But, by the time that offense was found it was too late. The Flyers scored three straight but lost to the Canes, 5-3.
Teuvo Teravainen struck twice and had three points on the night for Carolina.
“It’s always hard when you have a four-goal lead and it becomes a one-goal lead,” Teravainen said. “You have to keep believing. You’re still winning the game. Play simple and you might get a 2-on-1 or something because they’re cheating, (and) that’s what happened.”
Dougie Hamilton, Justin Williams and Warren Foegele also scored for the Hurricanes.
“We know where we’re sitting (in the standings), so we know we need the points right now,” Hamilton said. “Two big games and we got a lot of games coming up before the All-Star break and stuff, so we’ve got to get on a little roll.”
Petr Mrazek made 34 saves in the win.
“We haven’t seen anything like this really where we actually score on some chances. We’ll take it. We needed it. It wasn’t our best game, but our goalie (Petr Mrazek) was good when he needed to be. We played well enough early to get that lead, so that’s definitely the recipe,” -Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said of his club’s game scheme.
Wayne Simmonds, Sean Couturier and James van Riemsdyk tried to get the Flyers back in the game in the third period with their strikes.
“It’s like quicksand,” Simmonds said. “You’re trying to get out, and it feels like it’s getting deeper.”
The Flyers dropped to 15-20-5.
“It seems like we’re right in the game,” Couturier said. “Shots are pretty even, it’s up and down the ice, and we get down a goal and it gets frustrating not scoring, especially when you’re getting 20-25 shots and you’re not getting the bounces, and they get one bounce and it’s in the back of your net and you’re just chasing the game.”

Michal Neuvirth made 23 saves in the loss.
“The big word here is frustration. Trying to find a way to win a hockey game, it doesn’t matter how you do it, you just have to find a way, and right now we’re not, so frustration builds up and it’s not easy right now,” the Flyers’ Claude Giroux said after the loss.
