Flyers add former Steelers Swedish star Sandström

The Wolseley UK Fife Flyers have confirmed the signing of two-way Swedish forward Lucas Sandström for the 2022/23 Elite Ice Hockey League season.

32-year-old Sandström has considerable experience having played for several different sides in the Swedish second division. During that time, he has made over 500 appearances and scored 237 points.

Sandström made the move the EIHL in 2019 with the Sheffield Steelers where he iced 44 times and scored 31 points, 12 goals and 19 assists. As that season was curtailed he made the move back to Sweden.

He also has hockey pedigree in his family as he is the nephew of former NHL player Tomas Sandström, who was a part of the 1997 Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings side.

Commenting on his move back to the UK, Lucas Sandström said:

“I am really pumped to start the season up in Fife and help the team win games. I am a two way forward who works hard, tries to play with some grit and also score some points.

“I am looking forward to see all the fans, I only heard good things about the fans and town when talking to Jonas [Emmerdahl]. I know it is always a good atmosphere up in Fife since I played there before as the away team.

“My personal goals will be to help the team in all zones. Hopefully this season I can stay fit, I had a good summer back home in Sweden and I am super exited to start playing games again and make Fife into a playoff team again.”

Also commenting on the new arrival, Fife Flyers head coach and GM Todd Dutiaume said:

“Lucas is an experienced pro that knows what it takes to win in the Elite League on a nightly basis. He is a 200-foot player, who skates really well, kills penalties and can add depth in offense. I look forward to seeing him in Blue and Gold.”
