Fleury puts Penguins on the brink

PITTSBURGH , PENN. – While Montreal netminder Jaroslav Halak is arguably the single biggest reason the Canadiens are where they are now, Marc Andre Fleury came up big when it counted for the Penguins.

Fleury made 32 stops as the Penguins took a 3-2 series lead after a 2-1 win over the Canadiens at the Mellon Arena. Defenceman Kris Letang scored late in the first period, with veteran Sergei Gonchar converting Brooks Orpik’s pass to give the Pens a 2-0 lead.
Habs forward Mike Cammalleri grabbed his ninth goal of the post season with 30 seconds remaining, after the Canadiens pulled Halak to give them a 6-on-4 powerplay opportunity, but the visitors were unable to find a tying goal and now face elimination if they lose Monday night in Montreal.

The Pens will be confident going in to game 6 after a strong showing from not only Fleury but also Russian star Evgeni Malkin. The current holder of the Conn Smythe Trophy has been out of sorts thus far, but setup Letang’s opening goal and made a number of other strong plays on the night. The Penguins also welcomed back Bill Guerin, but scratched Alexei Ponikarovsky. The big forward was acquired from Toronto near the trade deadline, but has only scored 3 goals in 26 games since arriving in Pennsylvania.

Injury worries continue to dog the Canadiens. Giant blue liner Hal Gill left the game after a collision with Chris Kunitz and did not return. It now appears unlikely Gill will be fit for game six, but the Montreal coaching staff will be hoping to have Jaroslav Spacek available again after a spell on the sidelines with a virus. The Habs also saw two veteran blue liners participate in a light skate, under the supervision of the teams medical staff. Both Paul Mara and all star D-man Andrei Markov were thought to be out for the remainder of the season, and while it still appears highly unlikely either will play on Monday, it is unclear what their status might be should the Canadiens take the series to a seventh game,
