In Calgary on Saturday night, the Flames downed the Edmonton Oilers, 6-4.
Sam Bennett, the subject of trade rumors, potted his first goal of the season midway through the third period to give the Flames the 6-4 lead.
“I think it’s great for my personal confidence, but I think more importantly it’s the win for our team and the solid effort from everyone that really excited me the most,” Bennett said.
Jacob Markstrom made 28 saves in the win.
Milan Lucic had a goal and two points on the night.
“It’s a big win,” Lucic said. “Every game is a divisional game. It helps us get back in the win column. Perfect timing for this type of game, rivalry game, Battle of Alberta, and stuff like that.”
The Oilers had their three-game win streak snapped in the loss and dropped to 6-7-0.
“When you get six goals scored on you, there’s a few things you need to clean up,” Edmonton’ Darnell Nurse said. “We know we need to be better in our own zone and support each other in the middle of the ice. If we take care of that, we have enough offense.”
Nurse, Connor McDavid, Jesse Puljujarvi and Jujhar Khaira scored for the Oilers.
“They pushed back in the second and our response wasn’t good enough, and then they got the upper hand and we were chasing a little bit the rest of the game,” Nurse said. “We got a good start, but we have to carry that into the second and third and find a way to put the nail on it.”
Mikael Backlund potted a goal and added two assists in the win, and Johnny Gaudreau added a marker as well.
Gaudreau assisted on the Bennett goal in the third for the final strike of the game.
“Great play by Johnny,” Bennett said. “It was rimmed behind the net, Johnny picked it up quick and he just knew I was there, right on the tape, and that’s an easy one for me. He’s a pretty special player and really fun to play with.”
Dillon Dube, and Elias Lindholm also scored for Calgary.
Mikko Koskinen made 22 saves in the loss.
“We had a good start,” the Oilers’ Adam Larsson said. “It’s two good hockey teams going at it and I think you’re going to see those turns in the game, and we just have to learn how to play under pressure. Those are times you have to bear down and play really good structured hockey.”
