Flames score late to upend Jets, 3-1

In Calgary, Elias Lindholm scored with 47 seconds left in regulation to give the Flames a 2-1 lead over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday afternoon.

Tyler Toffoli potted an empty-net goal for Calgary for a 3-1 final.

Lindholm has scored in eight straight games.

The Flames have won 10 in a row.

“Ten in a row is nice,” Lindholm said. “Ten in a row, that’s good. We were struggling a little bit there before we started the streak. It was just nice to see it go in. It was a tough game. It was tight, not a lot of chances, but we stuck with it. Ten in a row feels pretty good.”

The Flames moved to 30-13-6.

“I don’t put a whole lot into 10 in a row unless they were 10 in a row in the playoffs,” Flames head coach Darryl Sutter said.

Dominic Toninato scored the Jets only goal.

“I think at this point of the year it’s about wins,” Winnipeg’s Pierre-Luc Dubois said. “I think that we can do a better job of bringing our identity to the other team. Calgary’s a good team. Nobody thought it was going to be an easy game, but it could’ve gone either way tonight. Unfortunately, it went their way. It’s a playoff race right now. Can’t be losing too many games.”

The Jets dropped to 22-20-8.

“It’s hard when you’re 40 seconds away from at least getting a point but it’s a hard-fought game,” the Jets’ Nate Schmidt said. “It was a good hockey game. There were a lot of chances for both teams and both goalies played well. It’s starting to get to that time where you need to start accumulating points this time of year.

“That team has been really good, and they came out with a good start. Once we got into the game — and I think we started to play better as the game went on … But it [stinks] that we give up one late.”

Calgary opened the scoring when Sean Monahan  hit for a goal and 1-0 lead.

“I didn’t see the offside goal until between periods and then I realized that I went offside there,” Lindholm said. “Today was a tough game. We didn’t have a lot going on, not a lot of chances, but we stick with it and found a way, just like last game, so it was nice.”

Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves in the Winnipeg loss.
