Flames rally past Detroit, 5-3

The Calgary Flames trailed 3-2 in their game with the Red Wings in Detroit Wednesday night. They rallied with three unanswered goals for a 5-3 win.

Johnny Gaudreau led the offense with a goal and four points in the win.

His goal was the game-winner in the third period.

“This was a pretty wild day,” Gaudreau, said. “I got those two incredible honors before the game, but the best part was another big win for us.”

Mike Smith made 29 saves in the win.

Darren Helm, Jacob de la Rose and Andreas Athanasiou scored for the Red Wings.

Helm returned to the lineup after missing 20 games.

“[Athanasiou] made a good play along the boards to set up the 2-on-1,” Helm said. “I was looking for an option, but ran out of space and was just able to squeak it under him.”

Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan and TJ Brodie also scored for the Red Wings.

“I feel like the three of us work hard every game, trying to create offense,” Lindholm said. “Obviously, things are going really well for us right now.”

The Red Wings have made a habit of giving up leads; they lost earlier in the week after leading 3-0.

“Monday night was embarrassing,” Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. “Tonight was better, but we are still giving up too many pucks in our own zone and not doing enough to get it back. We have to clean that up.”

Michael Frolik added an empty-net goal late to seal it for the Flames.

“We got better in every period, which was good to see. We were at 41 percent on face-offs in the first period, and we ended up at almost 60 percent. That means we have the puck more, we’re not spending as much time in our defensive zone, and we can create more offense,” Flames head coach Bill Peters said after the win.

Jimmy Howard made 30 saves in the loss.

“We lost nine of our first 10 games this season and we were able to dig ourselves out of that hole. Now we’re facing that same situation and we are going to have to do it again. It will be tough, but we have the experience to know we can do it,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said after the game.
