In Calgary, the Flames’ MacKenzie Weegar scored at 17:19 of the third period to knot their game with the Dallas Stars, 3-3, on Thursday, and force extra time.
Nazem Kadri hit for the game-winner 61 seconds into the session for the 4-3 win to Calgary.
“I thought it was a good goal from the start, but in the back of your mind, anything can happen,” Kadri said. “Obviously, they’re going to challenge it. It’s the game-winning goal. But I was pretty confident in it.”
Jacob Markstrom made 13 saves in the win.
“There’s been a big turn here lately,” Calgary’s Noah Hanifin said. “The team’s bonding, we’re coming together, we’re playing really good hockey right now. We’re not quitting and we’re playing against really good teams while we’re doing it. It’s great to see. Just got to keep this rolling into December here.”
The Flames improved to 10-10-3.
Dallas’ Thomas Harley scored at 4:51 of the first period to stake the Stars to a 1-0 lead.
“Everyone loves scoring goals,” Harley said. “I’d trade it for a win, though.”
Calgary’s Chris Tanev tied it, 1-1, at 8:02 of the first.
Hanifin scored at 15:30 to reclaim the lad, 2-1, for Calgary.
Mason Marchment hit for a double for the Stars’ loss.
The Stars dropped to 13-5-3.
“It’s a game of emotion and you’ve just got to try to stay even keel through it,” the Stars’ Thomas Harley said. “We’re a veteran team in here. I don’t think we got too up or too down, but we’ve got to play better.”
Marchment’s first came with one minute left in the middle frame for a 2-2 tie.
Marchment hit for double early in the third to push the Stars in front, 3-2.
Scott Wedgewood made 32 saves in the loss.
“A lead with whatever, under five (minutes) to go when they scored that other one, it feels like a little bit of one that slipped away again,” Wedgewood said. “It’s unfortunate, but maybe if you look at the statistics of what they were doing to us, maybe it was a point earned. But obviously, in our locker room, having a lead with five minutes left to play, that’s a point lost.”2
