Flames need late rally to force OT in 4-3 win over Kings

The Los Angeles Kings rallied from early 2-0 deficit to the Calgary Flames Wednesday bight but gave a tying goal early in the third and then lost in extra time, 4-3.

Sean Monahanpotted the game-winner for the Flames at 1:02 of overtime.

Matthew Tkachuk scored twice for the Flames including the goal that sent the match to extra time.

Mike Smith made 42 saves in another strong game for his club.

“If you’re going to get out-chanced 17-10 every night, 18-11, you’re not going to win many of those games. The League will put you in your place, so we have to find our place and nail it down,” Calgary head coach Glen Gulutzan said of his defense after the game.

Michael Frolikalso had a goal for the Flames.

After falling behind 2-0, the Kings rallied on a goal from Anze Kopitar and two tip-in goals from Dustin Brown .

“I think he’s (Kopitar) excited about being back on track,” LA head coach John Stevens said. “He’s excited about trying to prove that he can still be a good player in the League and he’s playing like it.”

Jaromir Jagr debuted for the Flames in his fist game since being signed just ahead of the season.

“I didn’t feel very well,” Jagr said. “But I expect that. I’m glad it’s behind me, so hopefully next game I feel better.”

Jonathan Quicktook the loss on 33 saves.

Stevens is a much more loquacious coach than former bench boss Darryl Sutter in LA.

“I just think we did a better job of getting traffic. Smith sees the puck. He’s a big goalie, and he makes saves, hangs on to pucks. Obviously in those two goals to start the period we did a better job of getting pucks to the net. But just overall pace, taking ice that was there, thought process I thought was a little slow to start the game,” Stevens said elaborating on the Kings’ efforts so far this young season.
