In Elmont, the New York Islanders’ Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri scored in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit to the Calgary Flames on Monday night and force extra time at 3-3.
Noah Dobson completed the rally when he scored at 4:02 of the extra session for a 4-3 win for the Isles.
The loss was the fifth straight for the Flames, 0-3-2.
“Huge win,” Dobson said. “We knew we didn’t have our best first 40 (minutes), but we stuck with it. We got one in the third, crowd got into it, momentum, and we just carried on from there. It’s not pretty, but it’s a big win. Showed a lot of character coming back there, and just a big goal in overtime.”
New York improved to 8-5-0.
“Everyone was going in the third,” Lee said. “We knew it was a game we had an opportunity to come back in. Once we got to our game, everyone that was going out there was making something happen.”
Ilya Sorokin made 43 saves in the Islanders win.
Mikael Backlund hit for a double for the Flames.
“We made some mistakes that cost us,” Backlund said. “Maybe that happens when the team isn’t feeling at their best, but we’ve got to turn this around. It starts with one win, and then we’ve got to go from there.”
The Flames took a 1-0 lead off Backlund’s first goal of the game.
Sebastian Aho tied, 1-1, for New York.
Elias Lindholm had a single marker for Calgary.
Jacob Markstrom made 28 saves in the Flames loss.
“I thought we had a great start,” Calgary’s Jonathan Huberdeau said. “We didn’t play a full 60 minutes and they took advantage of that. That’s what we have to control, play a full 60. Overall, I thought we still played with effort. At the end of the day, it’s not enough.”
