STOCKTON, Calif. – The Calgary Flames now lead the series 2-1 against the Vancouver Canucks following a physical and duel. The flames took the win 4-2, in a game many knew would be very physical, in light of game two’s 166 penalty minutes.
In the first period, Brandon Bollig scored the first goal at 6:35 into the game. Bollig scored his first goal after 22 games, when he caught a loose rebound from just up the slot and wristed it past Eddie Lack in the net.
Vancouver’s Shawn Matthia’s scored the equalizer at 9:09 with a wrister past Jonas Hiller. But Calgary’s T.J. Brodie crushes the puck from the top of the circle to the back of the net to put the Flames up 2-1.
The teams were scoreless until 2:14 into the third period, when Sam Bennett extended the Flames’ lead 3-1, when he skated into the crease and wristed a shot into the net. During a power play, Johnny Gaudreau passed the puck from the side of the net to the waiting Sean Monahan to wrist it from the top of the crease to give the Flames some breathing room.
The Canucks Jannik Hansen scored at 17:41, but it wouldn’t be enough, as Hiller was solid in the net for the Flames. The final two minutes were riddled with fisticuffs, but not quite as penalty ridden as game two; only 69 total penalty minutes for the game in all.
Lack took the loss for the game, with 24 saves, while Hiller earned the win with 23 saves.
Game four will be Tuesday, April 21, at Calgary.
