The Los Angeles Kings are playing through the schedule without a great deal of enthusiasm, having missed the playoffs there is little on the line.
Except maybe jobs next season in Los Angeles or up the road in Las Vegas.
For the visiting Calgary Flames, there was the first wild card spot on the line and they made the effort with a 4-1 win to keep pace tithe Nashville Predators.
“Right now at this time of the year, games are a little volatile,” Flames coach Glen Gulutzan said. “It’s not about wins or losses, it’s about playing the right way. We did a lot of good things tonight. That’s important, that your habits stay intact.”
Four different Flames’ skaters scored including Sam Bennett, Dennis Wideman, Freddie Hamilton and Alex Chiasson.
Calgary debuted Jon Gillies in goal and he made 27 saves for his first NHL win.
“That was an unbelievable effort by our team,” Gillies said. “It was fun to play behind. When you play behind a group like that, it’s easy to see why they’ve had so much success this year. It’s nice to be a part of it.”
Trevor Lewis had the lone strike for the Kings.
“I think our young guys had good energy and pretty good execution in the first period. I thought some of our older players really struggled with that, and that’s a little bit of probably end of the season for them,” LA head coach Darryl Sutter said.
End of season or not, the Kings are a team with little heart at this point and are most likely looking to a change of scenery.
