On Monday night in Calgary, Brian Elliott made 24 saves as the Flames moved closer to second place in the Pacific Division with a 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
They can clinch a playoff berth Wednesday with a win over the Los Angeles Kings.
“It’s a big game,” goaltender Brian Elliott said. “You want to control your destiny and not scoreboard watch. If we can come away with that one, that’s a big win for our
franchise.”
Monday night the Flames got goals from Sean Monahan , Micheal Ferland, Troy Brouwer, and Johnny Gaudreau as Calgary improved to 43-29-4.
“It seems like everybody’s winning that we don’t really want to win every night,” Brouwer said. “A win tonight puts us in a great spot to be able to get into a playoff spot on Wednesday. That’s one thing we had really emphasized before this game.”
That may be true but the Flames are doing their part as well in winning as well.
“Definitely excited. We know how close we are. We’ve done a great job here in the past month and a half to put ourselves in the position we are in today. You can tell the guys are excited about it too. We’ve still got a little bit more the rest of the season. We have to be strong the last week and a half, two weeks. But we’re definitely excited,” Gaudreau said.
Elliott continues to be the gem of the Flames winning ways with a 12-1-0 record over his last 13 games.
“Right now, it’s trying to get that ‘x’ and then we’ll go from there,” Elliott said. “But on our way up, if we catch a couple teams, that’s fine too.”
Sven Andrighetto struck for two goals for the Avs in the loss.
“We’ve been losing a couple in a row so we want to change that, so we have to push,” Andrighetto said. “But we’ve got to play a full 60 [minutes] and maybe give us a chance then.”

Calvin Pickard made 23 saves in taking the loss as the Avs dropped their record to 20-52-3 with their sixth straight loss.
“We’re just trying to talk to them about being loose and playing like we have nothing to lose and making sure that we’re creating enough opportunities,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said after the game.
