In Calgary, Jason Robertson’s second goal of the game came with 13 seconds left in extra time on Saturday for a 6-5 win for the Dallas Stars over the Flames.
“I was trying to make something out of nothing,” Robertson said. “I knew [Roope Hintz was] driving [to] the net, beat his guy. I was pretty high up to shoot it. I think I surprised him and I kind of surprised myself too. I was able to finish. Capped off a solid road trip.”
The Stars improved to 38-19-13 off their fourth win in six games.
Jake Oettinger made 33 saves in the Dallas win.
The Stars hold a three-point edge atop the Central Division.
“We know we can compete with any team in the League and we want to win the Western Conference,” Dallas forward Wyatt Johnston said. “The confidence is really high. We all believe in ourselves and we want to win the Stanley Cup.”
Joe Pavelski and Radek Faksa scored in the first period to give Dallas a 2-0 lead before the game was two minutes old.
Elias Lindholm trimmed the lead to 2-1 for Calgary in the first.
“Rough start,” Lindholm said. “Last 40 (minutes) we were playing well. Probably should’ve won in regular time. Got the one point and that was it.”
In the middle frame, Robertson scored his first of the night for a 3-1 lead to the Stars.
Calgary rallied on two goals to send the match to the third tied, 3-3.
The Flames dropped to 31-24-15, and trail the second weld card by four points in the Western Conference.
MacKenzie Weegar and Blake Coleman were the strikers for the tie.
“We did a good job of climbing back in the game,” Weegar said. “It’s the same thing battling down to the last minute going into OT. It comes down to one play. We’ve got to start making that play.”
In the third, the Flames continued their hot hand to take a 4-3 lead on a marker from Nick Ritchie.
“[A] lot of guys are having fantastic seasons,” Robertson said. “It kind of bleeds into my game and that success translates from our team to individuals. We’re doing really well in the standings right now. We want to keep it that way. That sure helps a guy like me to achieve that milestone.”
Jani Hakanpaa tied it back up, 5-5, at 12:09 to force the extra session.
“I think there were a lot of swing of emotions,” Robertson said. “There were 11 goals. I mean, it’s kind of funny. I don’t know who I was talking to in the intermission but I was like, ‘This isn’t like playoffs last year (in the Western Conference First Round), right?’ Every game was 1-0, 2-0. This season, every time we play them, it’s 6-5, 5-4, 6-5. It is what it is, but I’m glad we got the better end tonight.”
Jacob Markstrom made 20 saves in the loss.
