Flames down Canucks, 4-1

In Calgary, the visiting Vancouver Canucks took a 1-0 lead in the first period off a goal from Matthew Highmore.

“I just tried to get a stick on it,” Highmore said. “Honestly, I didn’t know it went in until I heard somebody scream. Just right place, right time. It was nice, just trying to play my game and help my linemates out.”

The Flames shook off the deficit and scored four straight goals in a 4-1 victory on Thursday night.

“We’re certainly not tweaking things in the system now,” Flames head coach Darryl Sutter said. “I’m going to put some other guys in the lineup and give them an opportunity and put them in back-to-back games and make sure they play the right way and go from there.”

Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves in the win.

“It’s obviously a different game now when both teams are out of the playoffs. That is what it is,” Markstrom said. “Still, we want to build something here and get an identity and play the way we want to play.”

Elias Lindholm and Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and two points apiece in the Flames’ win.

“I just try to take it game-by-game and play as good as I can these last three, but it’s obviously nice to score some goals,” Lindholm said.

Rasmus Andersson and Andrew Mangiapane also scored single markers for Calgary.

“Obviously we want to win the last three games, so that’s how we approach it,” Andersson said.

Thatcher Demko made 24 saves in the loss.

“I’m encouraged by our group,” the Canucks’ Tyler Myers said. “Obviously we’re going through a tough stretch right now. We don’t want to make any excuses, but we’re battling hard. I love the way we’re still battling even though we’re out of it.”
