In Calgary, the Flames and visiting Los Angeles Kings entered the third period tied, 2-2.
Yegor Sharangovich hit for the game winner at 12″09 to help send the Flames to a 4-2 win on Tuesday night, their fourth straight.
“That’s a team we’re chasing,” Markstrom said. “Really good two points. If you want to have a chance to go to the playoffs, and we’re chasing teams, we have to go on a run like this. So, it’s good.
“Right now, you look at the standings and they’re right above us. That means a lot because they didn’t get a win and we got a win, so we get two points closer. That’s what it means.”
The Kings grabbed a 1-0 lead on a strike by Danault at 12:08 of the middle frame.
“They play tight, we play tight, so it doesn’t bring a lot of offense,” Danault said. “But they played well. We played better in the second half and the third. They got a better bounce tonight.”
The lead lasted all of 48 seconds when Andrew Mangiapane tied the game, 1-1.
“It takes everybody, and everybody through the whole lineup,” Mangiapane said. “Everyone has a job and an important role. It takes everyone to win for our team. That’s what we’re doing right now. We’re all playing together, playing close and doing it for each other.”
Blake Coleman then fanned the Flames into a 2-1 lead less than a minute after that goal.
“I thought we were playing a pretty good game, and then they got the first one and everybody on the bench was saying keep going and keep playing the way we are and don’t let up,” Mangiapane said. “That was our answer. Keep playing the way we are and keep cycling it down low and breaking them down and tiring them out. We knew they were playing a back-to-back there.”
Kevin Fiala got the Kings even at 2-2 with a marker at 18:54.
“He’s playing great right now,” LA’s Quinton Byfield said. “His offensive side of the game is there and he’s playing good defensively as well. He’s helping us when we need him.”
LA dropped to 29-19-10 off their third loss in four games.
“It’s playoff hockey until the end,” LA’s Phillip Danault said. “We’ve put ourselves in this position and we’ve got to live with it.”
