In Calgary, the Flames posted three goals in the middle frame on Wednesday night and went on to a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils.
Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves in the Flames win.
“Didn’t like parts of our game,” Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. “I didn’t like the penalties, I didn’t like the double minor, didn’t like the too many men. Didn’t like the second goal. Outscored our mistakes tonight.”
Dawson Mercer and P.K. Subban scored for New Jersey.
Matthew Tkachuk,Dillon Dube, Milan Lucic, and Brett Ritchie were strikers for Calgary.
New Jersey dropped to 22-34-5.
Dube put the Flames up, 3-2, in the second period.
“My linemates helped me out a lot tonight,” Dube said. “I was in the middle skating, but it doesn’t do much if your wingers aren’t battling on the wall to get you the puck, so I think a lot of credit is on them too for being able to support me and find me in the middle.”
The Flames improved to 37-16-7.
“We just said we want to play straight lines and be heavy on the puck and get on the cycle and play in the [offensive] zone as much as we can, and I think we did a good job of that,” Lucic said.
Andrew Mangiapane also scored for the Flames.
Yegor Sharangovich scored for New Jersey in the third period to cut the Calgary advantage to 5-3.
Johnny Gaudreau hit for an empty-net goal in the third for the 6-3 final.
Nico Daws got the start for New Jersey, he surrendered four goals and made 15 saves before getting the hook in the middle frame.
“Obviously not the result we wanted as a team,” New Jersey’s Jon Gillies said. “We talked about it this morning and I thought we did a lot of good things tonight. The unfortunate part of that is you can do a lot of good things, but when breakdowns happen they’re usually going to put it in the back of the net and that’s what happened.”
Gillies made 19 saves in relief.
“I put Nico through a pretty tough test,” Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. “Probably an unfair test for a young goaltender. Back-to-back, came out of the game. Physically playing back to back is tough. Mentally getting prepared for every game is tough. We’ve asked a lot of him, probably unfairly I’ve asked a lot of him.”
