In Detroit, the Calgary Flames’ Andrew Mangiapane scored twice, including a late empty net goal, in a 4-2 win over the Red Wings on Sunday night.
“We’ve got [19] games left and we need to get a lot of points,” Mangiapane said. “If we can put together a little streak here, we can put ourselves in a good spot.”
That good spot is tied for the first wild card spot in the Western Conference.
“You play in this league to play in the playoffs,” Flames forward Sean Monahan said. “We’re at the stage where we need every game.”
David Rittich made 27 saves to get the win,
Dylan Larkin scored both goals for the WIngs.
“I thought we were much better in the second period, so that’s a tough goal,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “We struggle to score at 5-on-5 and on the power play, and that’s another goal we have to dig back in the third period.”
Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau had single markers for the Flames.
“With everything you talk about potential trap games, I thought the guys did a really good job,” Flames coach Geoff Ward said. “I thought our start was really good. We started on time and we were able to take an early lead. I thought we were fine through two. We would have liked to have been a little better in the third, but we got the [five-game] road trip off to a good start.”

Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves in the loss.
“We knew this was a big game for them, and they got two lucky bounces in their favor, but I thought our compete level was good,” Bernier said of the Flames. “Anything could have happened there at the end. We’ve been pretty good for most of the year to be relentless, and we proved that again tonight.”
