In Denver Tuesday, the Calgary Flames defeated the Colorado Avalanche, 6-3.
Mikael Backlund and Johnny Gaudreau each scored twice and had three points on the night.
“We showed some character,” Gaudreau said. “It’s a long day, getting up at 6, getting on the plane, flying all the way out here and taking a long bus trip to the rink here. I think the guys did a great job tonight.”
Gaudreau was referring to the Flames arriving in Denver early in the morning Tuesday ahead of the game.
The Avs were 0-for-6 on the power play and it may have cost Backlund who blocked a shot in the third with his knee and left the game.
“We just hope it’s a bruise and he can carry forward,” Flames coach Glen Gulutzan said. “That’s the residual of taking too many penalties. That’s something we have to address. We have to start dialing in on how many penalties we’re taking or it’s going to bite us.”
Sam Bennett and Kris Versteeg also scored for Calgary.
Brian Elliott made 25 saves for his second straight win.

Jarome Iginla had a goal and Gabriel Landeskog scored twice for the Avs.
“I believe you do earn your bounces,” Landeskog said. “For a team in our position we can’t just go out there and play and think that we’re going to get bounces. We have to work for every bounce that we get and the good things and the bounces will come.”
Calvin Pickard made 25 saves in the loss.
“You earn your bounces. I’m not going to make any excuses. Those pucks going into the net, they count just the same. You have to find a way not to have lapses like that. It’s another disappointing result on home ice. Six goals on 31 shots, it’s a tough result,” Pickard said after the loss.
